The Mets face off the Detroit Tigers today at 1:05pm in Lakeland, FL today. The Mets come off of an 8-5 defeat to the Nationals where Noah Syndergaard dominated the Nationals’ lineup in the three and a third innings he pitched yesterday. Syndergaard amassed seven strikeouts, five of which where he struck out a batter swinging. Brandon Nimmo continued his hot spring, going 3 for 5 while hitting a double and a triple.
Steven Matz will get the start today, hoping to rebound from his first two ghastly outings this spring where he allowed five runs in each of his starts. Matz will start against Tigers ace Michael Fulmer, who was traded to the Tigers for Yoenis Cespedes in that pivotal trade in 2015 that helped the Mets win the NL pennant that season. So far in his time in the Motor City, Fulmer has blossomed into a very promising ace for the Tigers. In Fulmer’s debut season back in 2016, he pitched for an ERA of 3.06 with an FIP of 3.76 and an xFIP of 3.95. Fulmer regressed a tad in 2017, pitching for an ERA of 3.83 with an FIP of 3.67 and an xFIP of 4.24. With the Tigers beginning their rebuild process, Fulmer will prove to be a fixture in the Tigers’ journey back to relevance.
