Mets Spring Training Pre-Game Report – 3/24/18

The Mets face the Cardinals yet again today at 1:10pm. The Mets lost to the Cardinals yesterday, 5-1. Michael Conforto made his spring training debut, going 1-4 as a designated hitter. Today, Conforto will get his first start in center field this spring in today’s game.

Zack Wheeler was optioned to Triple-A today, thinning the competition for the fifth spot in the rotation. Seth Lugo will likely begin the season as the fifth starter, as Jason Vargas is still nursing a fractured right hand. Wheeler pitched for an ERA of 8.10 and threw 14 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched this spring.

LHP P.J. Conlon will start against RHP Mike Mayers in today’s contest. The Ireland native pitched for an ERA of 3.38 and an FIP of 3.90 in 136 innings pitched in Double-A Binghamton last season.
